How to convert 45 minutes to decimal hours
To convert minutes into decimal hours, divide the number of minutes by 60.
For 45 minutes:
45 ÷ 60 = 0.75
So: 45 minutes = 0.75 hours
Because 45 minutes is exactly three-quarters of a 60-minute hour, this conversion is exact.
Why 45 minutes equals three-quarters of an hour
A full hour contains 60 minutes.
Three-quarters of 60 minutes is:
60 × ¾ = 45 minutes
And three-quarters written as a decimal is 0.75.
Therefore: 45 minutes = ¾ of an hour = 0.75 hours
This is why 45 minutes is one of the easiest decimal-time values to remember.
Why 45 minutes is not 0.45 hours
This is a common decimal-time mistake.
A decimal point does not mean the digits after it are normal minutes.
To convert 0.45 hours into minutes:
0.45 × 60 = 27 minutes
So:
- 45 minutes = 0.75 hours
- 0.45 hours = 27 minutes
This is also why:
8:45 = 8.75 decimal hours, not 8.45.
45 minutes added to whole hours
If a time includes whole hours and 45 minutes, keep the whole hours and add 0.75.
For example:
- 7h 45m = 7.75 hours
- 8h 45m = 8.75 hours
- 9h 45m = 9.75 hours
This is useful when completing timesheets, checking payroll records or converting worked time into decimal hours.
45 minutes on a timesheet or payroll record
Suppose you worked 8 hours 45 minutes.
The 45 minutes converts to 0.75 hours.
So the decimal time is: 8.75 hours
If a payroll or timesheet system expects decimal hours, entering 8.45 would be incorrect.
8.45 decimal hours actually means 8 hours 27 minutes.
Quarter-hour conversion pattern
The main quarter-hour values are easy to remember:
| Minutes | Fraction of an hour | Decimal hours |
|---|---|---|
| 15 | ¼ | 0.25 |
| 30 | ½ | 0.50 |
| 45 | ¾ | 0.75 |
| 60 | 1 | 1.00 |
This pattern is useful for payroll, timesheets and quick mental conversions.
