How to Convert Minutes to Decimal Hours

To convert minutes to decimal hours, divide the number of minutes by 60.

For example:

30 ÷ 60 = 0.50

So: 30 minutes = 0.50 hours

If you also have whole hours, keep the hours and add the decimal value of the minutes.

For example: 7 hours 30 minutes = 7.50 hours

This is useful for timesheets, payroll, shift calculations, invoicing and any situation where time needs to be written as a decimal number.

Minutes to decimal hours formula

The basic formula is:

Minutes ÷ 60 = decimal hours

For example:

15 ÷ 60 = 0.25

So: 15 minutes = 0.25 hours

Another example:

45 ÷ 60 = 0.75

So: 45 minutes = 0.75 hours

The same formula works for any number of minutes.

How to convert hours and minutes to decimal hours

If your time includes both whole hours and minutes, convert only the minutes and then add them to the whole hours.

The formula is:

Hours + (minutes ÷ 60)

For example, to convert 7 hours 42 minutes:

42 ÷ 60 = 0.70

Then add the 7 whole hours:

7 + 0.70 = 7.70

So: 7 hours 42 minutes = 7.70 decimal hours

Another example: 8 hours 15 minutes

15 ÷ 60 = 0.25

8 + 0.25 = 8.25

So: 8 hours 15 minutes = 8.25 decimal hours

Don’t treat minutes as hundredths

One of the most common mistakes is to assume that minutes can simply be written after a decimal point.

They cannot.

For example: 30 minutes is not 0.30 hours

30 minutes is half of a 60-minute hour, so:

30 ÷ 60 = 0.50

Therefore: 30 minutes = 0.50 hours

The same problem appears when people compare normal clock time with decimal time.

7:30 is not the same as 7.30

7:30 means 7 hours 30 minutes.

Converted into decimal hours:

30 ÷ 60 = 0.50

So: 7:30 = 7.50 decimal hours

By comparison, 7.30 decimal hours means 7 hours 18 minutes.

That is because:

0.30 × 60 = 18

So: 7.30 hours = 7 hours 18 minutes

What happens when the answer is a repeating decimal?

Some minute values do not convert neatly into two decimal places.

For example:

20 ÷ 60 = 0.333333…

This may be displayed as: 0.33 hours

Similarly:

50 ÷ 60 = 0.833333…

This may be displayed as: 0.83 hours

Decimal hours are often shown to two decimal places, but different payroll, timesheet or workforce systems may use different rounding rules.

If you are entering time into a specific system, it is worth checking how that system handles rounding.

How to check your conversion

You can check a decimal-hour conversion by multiplying the decimal part by 60.

For example: 7.70 hours

Take the decimal part:

0.70 × 60 = 42

So: 7.70 hours = 7 hours 42 minutes

Another example: 8.25 hours

0.25 × 60 = 15

So: 8.25 hours = 8 hours 15 minutes

This is a quick way to check that your conversion is correct.

Why are minutes converted to decimal hours?

Decimal hours are useful because they make time easier to calculate with.

They are commonly used for:

  • payroll
  • timesheets
  • shift calculations
  • hourly pay
  • spreadsheets
  • invoicing
  • job costing
  • billable time

For example, if someone works 7 hours 30 minutes at £15 per hour:

7h 30m = 7.50 hours

Then:

7.50 × £15 = £112.50

Using decimal hours makes the calculation straightforward.
