It does not mean that an hour literally contains 100 standard minutes.
A normal hour still has 60 minutes. The difference is simply how those minutes are written.
For example:
- 15 minutes = 0.25 hours
- 30 minutes = 0.50 hours
- 45 minutes = 0.75 hours
- 60 minutes = 1.00 hour
This format is commonly used for payroll, timesheets, shift calculations and other situations where time needs to be handled as a decimal number.
How does a 100-minute clock work?
The idea is simple.
Instead of writing part of an hour in minutes, you write it as a decimal fraction of the hour.
For example:
- 6 minutes = 0.10 hours
- 12 minutes = 0.20 hours
- 15 minutes = 0.25 hours
- 18 minutes = 0.30 hours
- 30 minutes = 0.50 hours
- 45 minutes = 0.75 hours
- 60 minutes = 1.00 hour
So if someone works 7 hours 30 minutes, that becomes:
7.50 decimal hours
The “100” refers to dividing the hour into hundredths for calculation purposes.
It does not create a new kind of minute.
Does an hour really have 100 minutes?
No.
A standard hour still contains:
- 60 minutes
- 3,600 seconds
The phrase “100-minute clock” is misleading if taken literally.
What people usually mean is that the hour is being expressed in hundredths, so one full hour is written as 1.00.
For example: 30 minutes is half of an hour. Half written as a decimal is 0.50.
So: 30 minutes = 0.50 hours
There have been historical and experimental systems that divide time differently, but that is not normally what people mean when they talk about a 100-minute clock for payroll or timesheets.
Why is it called a 100-minute clock?
The name comes from the way an hour is divided into 100 decimal parts.
Those parts are not normal minutes.
One hundredth of an hour is:
0.01 hour = 36 seconds
A tenth of an hour is:
0.10 hour = 6 minutes
A full hour is:
1.00 hour = 60 minutes
That is why values such as 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75 are commonly used.
They represent fractions of a normal 60-minute hour.
7:30 vs 7.30
This is one of the most important differences to understand.
7:30 means: 7 hours 30 minutes.
When converted to decimal hours:
30 ÷ 60 = 0.50
So: 7:30 = 7.50 decimal hours
But 7.30 decimal hours means something different.
Take the decimal part:
0.30 × 60 = 18 minutes
So: 7.30 decimal hours = 7 hours 18 minutes
In other words:
7:30 is not the same as 7.30
The colon shows hours and minutes.
The decimal point shows a fraction of an hour.

Decimal hours are useful because they make time easier to calculate.
Normal clock time is based on 60 minutes per hour.
Decimal time converts that into a standard numerical format, which is easier to use in:
- payroll
- timesheets
- hourly pay calculations
- spreadsheets
- job costing
- invoicing
- shift calculations
For example, 7 hours 30 minutes becomes 7.50 hours.
If the hourly rate is £15:
7.50 × £15 = £112.50
This is much easier than trying to calculate pay directly from hours and minutes.
Where might you see 100-minute or decimal time?
You may come across decimal time in a range of workplaces and systems.
Common examples include:
- payroll systems
- timesheets
- shift-based work
- annual leave recorded in hours
- invoicing
- billable time
- spreadsheets
- workforce management systems
- job costing
Different systems may display time in different ways, so it is always worth checking whether the number shown is normal hours and minutes or decimal hours.
Is a 100-minute clock the same as military time?
No.
Military time, also known as 24-hour time, still uses normal 60-minute hours.
For example, 14:30 means 2:30 pm.
The 30 still means 30 minutes.
A decimal-hour value of 14.30 would instead mean 14 hours 18 minutes.
So 24-hour time and decimal time are completely different systems.
How do you convert normal minutes to 100-minute time?
To convert minutes into decimal hours, divide the minutes by 60.
The formula is:
Minutes ÷ 60 = decimal part of the hour
For example:
42 ÷ 60 = 0.70
So: 42 minutes = 0.70 hours
If the full time was 7 hours 42 minutes:
7h 42m = 7.70 hours
How do you convert decimal time back to minutes?
To convert decimal hours back into normal minutes, multiply the decimal part by 60.
For example: 7.70 hours
Take the decimal part:
0.70 × 60 = 42
So: 7.70 hours = 7 hours 42 minutes
Another example: 8.25 hours
0.25 × 60 = 15
So: 8.25 hours = 8 hours 15 minutes
